The Software Underground is an open, free community of practice. It exists to support and promote anyone working with computers in the subsurface domain. Its members range from undergraduates in geology to professional software developers to corporate executives. The group delivers value way beyond its scope — two-thirds of the traffic on the site is via private chat. There are channels on jobs, meetups, hackathons, and hobbies. There is almost no chaff at all. It is a true community of practitioners.

Swung, as its sometimes known, has some expenses — chiefly the Slack subscription, curently about CAD 1500 per month. Swung also sponsors meet-ups, buys stickers, and helps fund events. Some expenses are met through member subscriptions, which are optional, and through T-shirt sales.

Because Swung does not exist as a formal entity, it has no bank account. Its funds are managed by Agile Scientific, a private company. For now, this is simply a practical solution — there’s little appetite for an organization, directors, committees, etc — but we recognize that a more formal, more transparent, framework is likely in Swung’s future.
